Serum microRNA-126 expression as a biomarker of diabetic retinopathy

BackgroundDiabetic retinopathy (DR) is a microvascular complication of diabetes mellitus (DM). Diabetic causes permanent blindness in the productive age group and has multifactorial pathogenesis. MicroRNA-126 (miRNA-126) regulates expression vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) gene at post-transcriptional level, VEGF being an important angiogenic protein regulating inflammation DR development. This study aimed to determine serum miRNA-126 as biomarker DM patients with DR. MethodsThis was cross-sectional involving 4 healthy persons 21 type 2 patients. Subjects consisted groups: i) controls, ii) without diabetic (NDR), iii) non-proliferative (NPDR) iv) proliferative (PDR). Venous blood collected from subjects for examination by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). MiRNA-126 each analyzed using One Way Anova test p<0.05 considered be statistically significant. ResultsMean significantly decreased PDR (1.86±1.03) NPDR (1.01±0.43 ) groups when compared control (2.44±1.29) NDR (2.15± 0.48) (p=0.027). values less than 1.81 can differentiate (sensitivity 83%, specificity 75%) 1.56 used predict 86%, 75%). ConclusionSerum potential screening patients, could non-invasive diagnostic parameter.
